The Graces, detail, 1813 Antonio Canova, Nov. 1, 1757 - Oct. 13, 1822
Today, I’m honoring Antonio Canova’s birthday and my sisters in friendship across the globe. My gift is a symbolic “embrace” with comparisons to the ancient goddesses ‘The Three Graces’ with each sister symbolizing unique gifts to humanity! Euphrosyne - joy and happiness, Aglaia -elegance and charm, Thalia -youth and beauty, and we are all three! They are also associated with Aphrodite (Venus) the goddess of love as they surround an altar adorned with flower wreaths and garland symbolizing their timeless bonds.
Canova is one of the greatest Italian neoclassical sculptors bringing inspirational biblical and mythological stories to life. Here you see a detail of the plaster model prototype located at the Museo Canova Gypsotheca in Possagno, Italy, where he was born. https://www.museocanova.it/en/collection/sculptures/le-grazie/
Canova created several final marble versions below: ❖ Victoria and Albert Museum, London (UK). (2nd Woburn Abbey version) c. 1814 – 1817, https://www.vam.ac.uk/articles/the-three-graces ❖ National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh (UK), c. 1815 – 1817 https://www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/38262 ❖ The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburgh, Russia, c. 1813 – 1817 https://www.hermitagemuseum.org/wps/portal/hermitage/digital-collection/06.+Sculpture/56538/?lng=en ❖ Rijks Museum, Amsterdam, (after), after 1825 - after 1850 https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/collection/BK-NM-12727

I created this short video to honor one my favorite sculptures by Canova called "L'Amour et Psyché à demi couchée" made of Carrara marble, 1793, at the Louvre Museum. The background music is by one of Canova's musical contemporaries, Antonio #Vivaldi titled: "L'inverno" (Winter), Concerto No. 4 in F minor, Op. 8, RV 297, Movement 2: Largo in E-flat major, created in1725.
